Vandr sat on his black dragon, Drengr, watching the town below them. Drengr was black as an inky void, a color well suited for sneaking around at night. They were flying over the town Gil`ead, a human settlement, a place he liked to visit from time to time. Looks like we’ll have an easy time of this town tonight Drengr…
Now a little bit of history on the pair: Vandr is a very powerful shade. Drengr is a very crazy dragon. Together the two are nearly unstoppable, and they have been together for a very long time. At present they were looking to start a small empire within the kingdom, and slowly expand it in both directions, taking over both human and elven territories.
Let’s go Drengr…time to start our empire!
Perhaps Vandr, however I sense a lesser shade below us in the city somewhere, but I doubt they’ll match you, us let alone. That being said Drengr let out a loud roar and let loose a bright flame, blackness tingeing the edges of it, and then glided down toward the city on silent wings. He leveled out about twenty feet above ground, and when he passed over one of the higher buildings Vandr jumped off. Drengr continued on his way, and when he passed over some of the cheapest houses in the town, more like little huts really, he let loose another column of flame, setting them on fire.
While Drengr was off having fun, Vandr was slowly making his way to the city citadel, intending on either capturing or killing the lord living there. After all, what better way to take over the city than to force the surrender of its lord, who can command his or her men to stand down. It was in this state that he was found slowly creeping up a deserted alleyway, most of the cities inhabitants hiding indoors from the wrath of Drengr. It was also in this state that he ran straight into the other shade in the town.
Who are you? Have I met you before?

((Did he say that aloud or telepathically?))
Væte had been near the poor district when it got abruptly set on fire, and he was understandably startled by the rain of fire from the sky, and he was even more startled to see that its source was a dragon. He'd been given to understand that dragons were safe, more or less. He could tell that there had been no recent, major fires in the city - the buildings were all of the same age, and showed signs of aging that had to have been accumulated over at least the past decade. Dragons couldn't be particularly prone to fiery rampages, or he would have seen the signs.
Even as he fled the fire for the inner city, he reached out with his mind, instinctively probing for the source of the disturbance - and found it walking out of an alleyway towards him. Remembering the fight with the abomination, he quickly withdrew his mind behind a shield, locking himself down as tightly as possibly, and took the measure of this new disturbance.
"Oh," he said. The other man was evidently a Shade, and one a good deal older and more powerful than Væte himself. Væte put on a wide grin. "We're Væte!" he said. "We're pretty sure we haven't met you before. We're new around here." He took a step closer. He wouldn't say he trusted this new Shade, but his hand not yet straying to his daggers. "Say, are you behind that little stunt with the - " he gestured behind him, to the poor district, where the sound of flames and screaming still echoed - "dragon? Because we must say, we weren't expecting a sudden torrent of flame. You should warn people before you go setting everything on fire." His blood red eyes narrowed. He could tell something was . . . not right here. This man wasn't like the abomination - he was a true Shade. But Væte was damn sure he had his own agenda, and had a nasty suspicion that it wouldn't line up with Væte's.

We’re Vaete! We’re pretty sure we haven’t met you before. We’re new around here. Vandr stopped walking and looked the other shade over, instinctively knowing that the other was much younger and much less powerful than he himself was. Say, are you behind that little stunt with the dragon? Because we must say, we weren’t expecting a sudden torrent of flame. You should warn people before you go setting everything on fire.At this he grinned, and then replied in a smooth, snakelike voice.
Ah, so you’ve met my dragon eh? Drengr likes setting things on fire, as do I. Yes I’m behind the stunt, I’m Drengrs’ Rider. As for warning people of what I’m about to do, or have Drengr do, why would I do that? It ruins the plan. It ruins the fun. It ruins the pleasure. Besides, I like the sound of pain and suffering…. At this last part he narrowed his eyes, turning them into catlike slits.
Hmm….I could use the help of another shade, I would make my work that much easier. Of course it would be even nicer if Herlio were here to help, even I’m no match for her. So…another shade in Gil`ead? Why are you here…whelp? The final word he said was meant to draw Vaete out, to test out how much it would take to draw the younger shade out. He was sure by now though, that Vaete’s plans differed very much form his own.
Drengr, come to me friend. I’ll see you in the courtyard in front of us. A cruel smile played across Vandrs lips. So friend, my name is Vandr. With that he strode past the shade walking toward the courtyard he had mentioned to Drengr, expecting the other shade to follow. Of course this opened him up to an attack, but he had long since perfected the art of killing other shades, and his sword, Bloodrend, had seen many shades hearts pierced. Besides that he didn’t think that Vaete would be so stupid as to attack him. Come Vaete….meet Drengr.

"Personally, we've always found the sound of pain and suffering to be a little too piercing. Gag them first, that's what we always say," Væte chattered nervously. "Pleasure to meet you, Vándr."
He followed Vándr obediently, but stopped at the entrance the courtyard. The courtyard only had one exit, and he had no intention of letting himself get boxed in. He had no illusions about being able to outfight Vándr if it came to that - but he had a feeling he might be able to outrun or outhide him.
"Nice to meet you too, Drengr," Væte said. "So . . . Vándr . . . Drengr . . . you two didn't answer my question. What're you here for? Just for the fireworks back there? Pain and suffering etc. etc.? Because if so, I'm totally willing to just leave you to that. The noise, you know." He tapped one ear.

Vandr noticed how Vaete stopped at the entrance into the courtyard, and how he was nervously chattering. A few moments later Drengr landed, causing the entire courtyard to shake and then he roared. Vandr walked over to him then turned around to face Vaete with a evil grin on his face. So…Vandr…Drengr…you two didn’t answer my question? What’re you here for? Just for the fireworks back there? Pain and suffering etc. etc.? because if so, I’m totally willing to just leave you to that. The noise, you know. Throughout Vaetes speech Vandrs grin kept getting wider and wider. Silence Vaete…I would never simply attack a city like this for the mere pleasure of it. Think. What would happen if this cities governor was forced to submit to a shade and pledge his and his men’s obedience to said shade hmm? You would have the beginnings of a new empire. I am merely the tool for a bigger plan though. This is the first attack of a revolution. The revolution of the ancient and powerful Herlio…surely you have heard of her?Drengr, attack the citadel, burn the entrances. Drengr took off in the direction of the citadel, blending in with the night. Vandr continued looking at Vaete. So shade….what’s it to be hmm?

Væte's smile vanished when Vándr told him to be silent. He didn't much like being ordered around; he'd had enough of it as a spirit, at the hands of Ahtel and his ilk, and he'd had enough of it as Ahtel, growing up. Although he kept his face in quite a decent facsimile of polite interest, he found himself hating the other Shade.
He leaned casually against the courtyard wall. "We don't know what would happen if that happened; we're rather new here, and we've never seen anything like that before."
He didn't know what would happen, but he had a good idea that it would involve more of one Væte, nee Ahtel Fresson, getting ordered around.
A puzzled frown crossed his face at the mention of a new name. "Herlið?" he asked. "Never heard of her. Like we said, we're new around here. But you . . ." he peered closer at Vándr. "You're a lot older than us. How long have you served her, eh? How much longer are you going to - "
And then he broke off as a subtle sense of deep wrongness settled on the edges of his consciousness. "Someone's coming," he said without thinking. It was the abomination, the half-Shade, approaching.
Suddenly, Væte started to giggle - because he was willing to bet that the abomination, who had been quick enough to attack Væte, would be equally eager to attack Vándr. "The abomination's coming," he told Vándr. Either way, one of the two - the abomination or Vándr - was going to be soundly defeated. "This is going to be fun!"

Finally I strike a nerve. Such were Vandr’s thoughts when he saw the smile on the face of Vaete vanish. He could also see that the other shade was indeed quite clueless as to what would happen. I’ll explain it to you then. If I take over this town, or city, or whatever it is the humans and other creatures call it, then I have secured the beginnings of a new empire headed by shades. This can be used as a staging point for launching attacks and a stronghold to fall back on. Once the humans are under my, or rather Herlið, we have an army…and Gilead is known to garrison a fairly large army even in times of peace. I’m sure you can guess what can be done with an army right?
He saw the look of puzzlement when he mentioned his masters name. Herlið, long may she live, is my master, but also master of many. She’s the master creator of shades, and a most powerful shade herself. Much…much stronger than I, even with the help of Drengr.
About that time he also had a sense of a wrongness coming toward them, a deviation from the normal order of things, an abomination. The other shade apparently noticed it to for a few minutes later he heard uttered, The abomination’s coming. This is going to be fun! However ‘fun’ was apparently not in the cards for this night, as a few minutes passed and the world seemed to return to the correct order of things. I’ve served my master for over three hundred years, and she’s nearly twice that in age. After all of Alagaesia has been conquered…I will have no more use for her. Guess the rest.
With that he had his sword pulled out and slowly started walking toward Vaete. So Vaete, what will it be eh? Will you join us and help me, or will you fight to try to prevent me taking the city. His words were punctuated by the long, loud roar of Drengr.

Væte cocked his head, and leaned forward, a flicker of interest lighting his red eyes. There was something of Ahtel Fresson - of the man so desperate for power that he let the spirits overwhelm him - in his expression. "That sounds . . . interesting," he said. "We can see the possibilities of such an alliance." He took a step closer to Vándr - and then whipped around with inhuman speed, shouting "Fel oss!" and starting off at full speed into the city.
The spell cloaked him, not making him invisible, exactly, but making it difficult for the eye to focus on him. And at the speeds he was travelling, it was an easy thing to think you were following him and then find that your eyes were fixed on some random passer-by.
Væte headed for the shadiest parts of the town - the places that would still be bustling at this time of night, where there would be plenty of movement to distract Vándr from his target should he choose to give chase.
