[/ul]Full History:
Born in a remote village on the northern tip of Alagaesia, Camna was originally known as Rhyanon. The landscape was harsh and bitter, often frozen over by cold layers of snow and ice. Some question if the tribe’s location was even within Alagaesia’s borders. The tribe, whose existence is known by only the well-educated, is called The Quasee. Their language is a dying breed and consists of heavy consonants and sharp vowels, though names tend to take on a gentler tone. The sun rarely peeks out through thick layers of grey cloud and blossoming blizzards so most of The Quasee have pale skin and dark hair, which both men and women keep long. There is no monarchy rather a tribal leader, known as The Q’ara (who is always female). Those within The Quasee follow a matriarchy where women are considered superior to men; however, both genders must work in harmony for survival from the low temperatures. Meat is a main dish; creatures resembling heavily fur-coated bison roam through the snow as well as elk-like animals, as well as a rare species of wolves and hares. Gardens containing vegetables (the seeds of which are brought in from rare trading ventures or taken from the years previous crop) are kept within homes where lit fires keet the frost at bay. Homes are built mainly of animal skin and bone and are dome-shaped. A fire is kept blazing in the middle where a small, circular incision is carved out in the roof to let out the smoke. The Quasee are an ancient breed of humans who have separated from the people of Surda, though under command of the king/queen they do not follow the monarchy. Most leaders of Surda’s government have accepted this fact. Some hold prejudice against The Quasee and view them as uneducated savages.
The Quasee have practiced magic for many centuries. They heat special incense and believe it to hold magical properties that are healing to the spirit. They never kill without thanking the spirit of the animal for sustaining their life and ask for forgiveness. Their magic differs somewhat from that of the ancient language; they believe it comes from the earth’s core rather than the ancient tongue of elves. Fire is an essential to any magical summoning which must be completed in groups. It is rare for anyone other than the Q’ara to perform an enchantment without anyone else.
Rhyanon grew strong. She enjoyed the company of those within her village and often sat at the fire listening to her mother sing stories weaving past histories of The Quasee. During the day she would follow both parents out into the wild to learn how to track the animals while also discovering tricks to stay alive if lost. She played games with the other children and built snow forts; often the children would burrow beneath a large pile and pretend to be the snow-ferrets that scurried across the land.
Rhyanon always held a large fascination for the group’s magic summonings; often they were held to heal a member of the tribe who was seriously ill/wounded, to help with crops, ease the cold, or fix something hopelessly broken. Never was magic allowed for any one person. It was seen as selfish. Magic was held in high respect and only to be used for the tribe’s wellbeing. But Rhyanon had been overcome with great curiosity and often questioned her parents on the matter. She would sneak off of on her own and play with little flames, a simple trick known by many. It was often used to start fires for cooking/keeping warm. It was one of the few sources of magic one was able to use on their own as it was seen as a common necessity considering the scarcity of wood.
When Rhyanon was nearly fifteen a boy, not much more than a handful of years older than she, came back to the village with his mother and father. They had gone south in a trading venture, bringing back supplies and news. He claimed to have seen the elves and heard their magic; he explained how a simple word emitted from a single tongue could do much magic. Many of the elderly scoffed in disagreement, knowing his words to be true but did not liking the form of magic the elves committed as it granted an individual too much power over another.
Rhyanon had been hypnotized with the boys words. She asked of their spells but he could hardly remember the strange language, stating the only word he could recall was ‘adurna.’ He said he believed it to be a manipulator of water. Barely thanking him Rhyanon ran off and hid in a snow fort built two previous days ago already frozen over and solid. Unsure of how it worked exactly she first whispered the word between her lips over and over until at last, confident, she raised her palm to the front of the fort crying out, “Adurna!” To her immense joy the fortress’s wall crumbled at her command and the fragments of ice lingered in the air. But she did not have much time to rejoice as she immediately fainted with the effort used. She was found by her father, the tribe had been searching for Rhyanon for the past two hours. It was believed that the fort had collapsed upon her and that she had passed out from fear. Slight frost bite had worked its way into her toes and Rhyanon did not awake until the following night. She was too afraid to tell anyone what had truly happened knowing it would land her in big trouble.
When Rhyanon was 23 the thirst for magic had not yet been quenched. A year previous she had journeyed with other members to the south and in secret purchased a book depicting various spells in the ancient language. Now feeling to be old enough she crept out at night fighting back the bitter cold to where she had dug a pit in the snow a few miles away from her village. Using her tribe’s magic she lit a fire and opened the book. Part of Rhyanon warned her otherwise, but she was only curious. What harm could one spell cause? She had plenty of warmth in case she passed out and had eaten a hearty meal beforehand. But Rhyanon did not understand the power behind even such simple magic in the ancient language and was ignorant in its history.
She misread the spell, not understanding its true ability, and at random chanted others while intermixing her own cultural beliefs. It was through her selfish desire and ignorance that Camna was born. As the spirits possessed her body, infiltrating her veins, Rhyanon felt her conscious thoughts evaporate into mist as searing pain overcame her.
As a young Shade Camna is a bit naive towards the strengths of others and her own abilities; she once encountered a witch, who was a descendant from her tribe. The elderly woman knew of the fighting Rhyanon inside the Shade and felt a sliver of pity. So she ‘cursed’ the girl to do the will of any honest being that looked her square in the eye and asked a favor tagging along a please.
Parts of Rhyanon tend to slip out. She is a stubborn girl who fights back at the spirits hosted within her flesh. To say she is truly evil would be a misconception, but there is not much good within Camna save for the fighting Rhyanon. It is unknown the fate of her parents, but Camna does not care to dwell on such thoughts.
